What Makes York, PA Famous
Did you know Washington, DC was not the first Capital of the United States? Do you know where the words, “The United States of America” were first spoken? The answer to both of these questions is York, PA. I admit I’m not a history buff, but I must have dozed off in history class during those lessons.
It is true…York, PA was the first Capital of the United States for nine months. During the Revolutionary War, the British advances forced the Continental Congress to flee Philadelphia. They settled in York, PA for nine months, where they drafted the Articles of Confederation and proclaimed the first National Thanksgiving Day.
But history isn’t the only draw. York exudes an artsy vibe that’s hard to miss. Wander the streets, and you’ll discover murals hidden in alleys, sculptures gracing street corners, and storefronts that beckon you to explore.
And it doesn’t stop there. The local cuisine at several downtown restaurants will leave you yearning for more. From made-to-order meals to tantalizing cocktails, there’s something for everyone to indulge in.

This Renaissance Revival gem opened in 1925 and has been lovingly restored, reopening in 2023 after seven years of renovations. This luxurious hotel is part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
From the wrought iron work along the stairs and the original revolving door to the brass Cutler mail chutes on every floor, this hotel invites you to step back in time. York might not be the first place you think of for a culinary destination, but its food scene will surprise and delight you. You will be thrilled by the abundance of local restaurants serving up mouthwatering dishes. Here are some of our must-visit spots:
The Davidson Lobby Bar & Restaurant
Located in The Yorktowne Hotel, this spot offers more than just food and cocktails—it’s an experience. As you dine in an open restaurant alongside a large mural of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, you think, “if these walls could talk.” Seeing the original terrazzo flooring beneath your feet, you ask, “what famous people have walked through this lobby?”. Savoring a made-to-order meal or a nightcap at the bar surrounded by rich architecture and retro vibes makes every bite and sip memorable.
Revival Social Club
Outdoor dining on a warm evening? Yes, please! Start with their culinary creation of a vegetable appetizer with homemade hummus – it will not disappoint! The roasted mushrooms, peppers, cauliflower, and carrots melt in your mouth. Add them to freshly baked crostini and homemade hummus will make one wince for more. Follow it up with their strawberry salad, a sweet and refreshing treat paired perfectly with a Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier beer.
Iron Horse York
If you’re a pizza and specialty cocktails lover, this is a can’t miss. Their brick-oven pies are made with fresh, local ingredients. We tried the red sauce, pepperoni and mushroom pizza—it was divine! The crispy edges of the pepperoni complimented the mushrooms and crispy dough. The colors just popped, too, with the tan crust, bright red sauce, and charcoal edges on the dough. Pair it with their wild berry cocktail with smashed fresh berries for a match made in heaven. All of their craft cocktails sound so delicious that it’s worth multiple trips to try each one.
Rockfish Public House
Seafood lovers, rejoice! Though York is not near the coastline, Rockfish can certainly cook up delicious seafood. The seafood linguine, packed with scallops, shrimp, clams, and muscles in a perfectly spiced tomato sauce, is a standout. Add a cabernet or margarita for a perfect pairing. And don’t skip dessert – the flourless chocolate torte with caramel drizzle is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And if that wasn’t enough, top it off with a few York Peppermint Patties that come with your bill. (And yes, in case you were wondering, York Peppermint Patties were first created in York, PA.)

Breakfast lovers will adore this cafe’s fresh, hearty offerings. From the garden burrito to the bagel sandwich with crispy bacon and eggs, everything is made to order.
